Start Line Questions

1 One minute to go and slowly approaching the middle of the line on starboard tack. I have a nice space below which I'll be able to use to bear away and accelerate in the last 15 secs. Then I notice a boat coming up from behind me clearly aiming to occupy the space immediately to leeward of my position. Well before his bow gets anywhere near the line of my transom I bear away hard to protect my space and come up back to close hauled sharply. Can I do this without contravening any of the starting rules?

2 One minute to go and I'm on starboard tack somewhere towards the committee boat end and well over. I notice that there is quite a sag in the middle of the line of approaching boats so aim to bear away and come up just in front of the slow moving boats approaching the line from below. Same question: can I do it? What would cause a justifiable protest from the approaching boats?

Any answers for wider circulation?   These are classic Shustoke start line problems!

MS5 @ Broadstairs

What a cracking weekend -
Good wind, forecast to drop on Sunday - although at 20-22 knots and wind against tide it didn't seem to have dropped!

Courses spot on, despite the cross-tide potential problems on the Saturday.  Committee boat lying to tide so bow downwind.

Starts without hanging around between races, accurate lines with boats spread all along the start line.

Waves to surf down, and sunshine while packing the boats away at the end of the day.

25/34 in Lawrence's boat (Bagsy still away for warranty repairs).

Nationals @ Sidmouth  22-27 Aug

This years Nationals are at Sidmouth Sailing Club in Lyme Bay on the historic Jurassic Coast. Sidmouth SC is a small friendly club located at the eastern end of Sidmouths promenade and we can be assured of a great Nationals from their very experienced social and race team.

As it stands Shustoke will be represented by 2 boats, Bagsy and 2888 (it needs a name!).   It will be a fabulous week.
