Offshore with Shustoke

offshore-1.jpgHi it’s that time of year again when another crop of Day Skippers are emerging from their winter classroom. A bit like a Polar Bear emerging from hibernation wincing in the sun light and wanting to eat the first thing it finds.

Well the first thing the Day Skippers got their jaws around, metaphorically speaking, was the annual May Day weekend sail. In all six boats went out with the following skippers, Greg Pace, Gwyn Oliver, Simon Durk, Andy Gillman and Phil Blackman as well as my good self as you may expect this involved around 40 people in all.

We set off from the Hamble on Sat Morning bound for Chichester each yacht making it’s way via some interim stop. Some went to Cowes, some to Osbourne Bay anchorage and at least one to Portsmouth. The wind was light SW and the sky overcast  but with a little tide underneath us we soon made short work of the passage. We moored up in the river at Itchenor and went ashore for a well earned meal and a pint.

Now I always like to add a competitive element to all of my web site submissions and this one is no different, below are two photographs. The photograph on the left has a story to tell about the one on the right. I will let you track down the person in the photograph and extract the story at your leisure and no it’s not getting drunk !!!!!

The next day we had planned a sail around the Isle of Wight on the south side via St Catherines Point, again we were working the tides to best effect. My crew got me up at about 6:30 am and I awoke at about 10:00. You can’t beat the enthusiasm of a Day Skipper !!

The boats resided in either Yarmouth or Lymington for the night before making a passage to Newton Creek for a spot of lunch and then a sprint back up to the Hamble. A good time was had by all, although I am still in the process of uncovering a number of stories.

Getting ready to go, departure from the Hamble, Suzie and Trevor Jones assisting.

If you fancy a trip offshore please get in touch with any of the skippers listed here, we are a friendly bunch and by no means exclusive. We welcome all comers and abilities, whether you are a transatlantic sailor or you have never been on a yacht before.
