sharks_logo.gifSummer Sharks Have A FUN Day

Saturday saw the last meeting of the Sharks for the summer session.

The day started normally enough with the Sharks all entering the first race. All that entered finished and mostly all stayed afloat.

sharksfun.gifAfter lunch we first tried to climb up the mast of a Topper, with no one able to get any more than half way before falling back into the water.

Although we all tried we could not sink a Topper but we had fun trying. The most we were able to do was push the stern below the surface but the bow just refused to go below the waves. The record still stands, so we will have to try again when we have more members.

sharksfun1.gifThe day was finished off with one of the Sharks favourite games, which is capsizing practice. Again a poor Topper took the indignity of being turn over time and time again with in the safety of the pontoon.

We would like to thank the parents for helping with getting boats sorted, although now most Sharks sort their own. The parents support and encouragement make the amount of time and effort we put in all worth while.

So what now for the Sharks – there will be a 4 week break while the RYA 1&2 training takes place for both adults and children.

We look to start again in October; the excellent news is that John Dransfield has volunteered to help the Sharks achieve their RYA Level 3. We will look to run this in with our normal programme.

Next meeting will be on Saturday 3rd October at 2:00pm, the Autumn & Winter Sharks will run in the afternoons. The water at this time of year get a lot colder, so the use of dry suits is recommended and later in the session required. If there are any junior dry suits out there that members would like to sell please let us know.

Jane and I are very happy with the way the Sharks have taken off and would like to thank all the other members for letting the Sharks have the opportunity to improve and enjoy the sport we all love.

9th July...How to frighten off a Shark

It would appear all you need to keep sharks at bay is ensure you keep a SPIDER in your boat. Well if they are Shustoke Sharks anyway. This may come in useful this week end in the Regatta were keeping the Sharks away may be required.

Last week we put all the Sharks into the water as they practiced capsize drill in a Topper. It is fair to say that they had a great time, keeping them on the pontoon was the biggest battle.

All the Sharks are improving their skills and many of the parents are really getting involved as well, which make Jane and I life a bit easier. But if you have the time just come along and we will find a way you can help.

The next normal session is on 18th July starting at 10:00. Depending on the wind conditions we may be looking at the role of crew (if you ask me the most important position in a two hander).

Look forward to seeing all the regulars Sharks, but it would be great to see a few new faces.

Here’s to keeping out irons.
