Junior and Youth Sailing

Our active youth section is growing and we’re proud to have some of the UK’s top youth sailors amongst our members

For those new to sailing we offer the RYA youth sailing scheme courses from beginner upwards along the RYA training pathway. These are organised throughout the year, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get started.

Our junior ‘Pirates’ get to partake in informal development sessions too, usually on Saturday afternoons and during school holidays. Aimed at under 16’s who’ve completed RYA Stage 1 & 2 training, the Pirates section, supported by qualified dinghy instructors and experienced sailors, are there to help develop skills and bridge the gap between training courses to become confident club sailors.

The Pirates get to develop their skills first using the clubs Optimist and Topper dinghies, of which we have just invested in six more, and when they’re ready, they can move into our Laser Pico or RS Feva dinghies. All of these boats are designed to develop young sailors and their all round sailing skills. Getting out on the water as a family is also possible with access to our fleet of larger boats that are available for club members.

Further class association training is undertaken from time to time and provided by youth fleets and the RYA to enhance the already strong training and development set up we have.

Our novice race series is a great way for juniors and youth sailors to experience racing in a safe and enjoyable environment, supported on the water by experience sailors. When they are ready they are very welcome and encouraged to take part in club racing at all levels and we even have the Terry Booth Trophy race specifically for them, this usually takes place in September.

So whatever your level of experience, get in touch to arrange a ‘taster’ session for prospective pirates and to get involved in sailing at Shustoke.
